In 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau will perform a headcount of every person in the United States. The U.S. Census Bureau performs this count every 10 years to determine the number of people living in the U.S. and to determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. Other uses of the data include political redistricting, distribution of federal funding, and planning for infrastructure and social services. Census data is also essential to monitor demographic changes and trends across the country.
The U.S. Census Bureau will mail an invitation to participate to every household in San Marcos beginning March 12th.
A correct count is critical for San Marcos as Census numbers are used to determine, among others, the funding of important programs such as supplemental nutrition assistance (SNAP), Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers, Children’s Health Insurance, Highway Planning & Construction, Federal Pell Grant, Head Start, National School Lunch, WIC, CDBG Disaster Recovery, and Low-Income Home Energy Assistance.
