About the Main Street Program

San Marcos was designated in 1986 as an official Main Street City by the Texas Historical Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation and remains one of the oldest Main Street programs in the state. In addition, San Marcos has been named a National Main Street City by the National Trust and the Texas Historical Commission since the recognition was established in 1999. The program is one of only a few cities in Texas to receive this honor.

Objectives

Since 1986, the San Marcos Main Street Program has aimed to provide economic stability to the heart of our city through a comprehensive revitalization program focused on design, economic vitality, organization and promotion:

  • Design: Support the community’s transformation by enhancing the physical and visual assets that set the commercial district apart.
  • Economic Vitality: Focus on capital, incentives and other economic and financial tools to assist new and existing businesses, catalyze property development, and create a supportive environment for entrepreneurs and innovators that drives local economies.
  • Organization: Create a strong foundation for a sustainable revitalization effort, including cultivating partnerships, community involvement, and resources for the district.
  • Promotion: Position the downtown or commercial district as the center of the community and hub of economic activity, while creating a positive image that showcases the community’s unique characteristics.
